Cardboard is my friend still. MY spaceship traveled farther than the Enterprise and twice fast though that was before Scotty got a hold of it too. What a trip this was, returning to those wonder years. Thanks Muffy! great piece.
I grew up "kind of hillbilly", yet wound up appreciating the Art Institute of Chicago, classical music, vintage jazz (both of which I later learned to play) and and having a lot of memorable experiences in a very long tech career that included international travel and culture.
Not sure if I could ever write about it with the clarity that you tell your story!
thanks, Brian! it has taken many years to be able to share it with the world. here’s to us feral hillbillies that made it out and cultured ourselves! 😂
I loved your story! I'm a 71 baby and you just took me back on a great journey. I had cardboard boxes in my room. 1 in the living room where I could watch tv. 1on the side of the house. We have these huge ones at work. I am so tempted to take one home. Lol
I wrote a collection of short stories twenty years ago centered on the period of my youth twenty years before that. Sort of 1982-1987.
The usual theme of "A gourmet kitchen was a bag of Doritos from 7/11" as you might imagine. Most stories were taken directly from the long hot summer days between school years.
One was called An Itchy Scratchy STD. I'm happy to share it. I monetized it fifteen years ago and again in 2020 when our daughter used it for a scholarship at the University of Virginia.
I am happy to share it. Maybe 2,000 words. I know it will make you chuckle (relatable). But I am unfamiliar with your audience.
OhHellYeah.
Forts and Fire. Long Summer days with zero supervision. A world of endless possibility.

And Hulkamania runnin’ Wild.

I was with you on this ride - till I got to how Lonnie showed you how to manually ejaculate a dog. My heart just stopped.
I wondered if I wanted to continue reading… I did finish it.
